McAllen To Celebrate Earth Day, Opening of Discovery Center
The City of McAllen with title sponsors Green Mountain Energy and H-E-B proudly announce the largest Earth Day celebration in South Texas at Quinta Mazatlan on Saturday, April 21st from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Bring the kids for a full day of family fun and entertainment to the new Discovery Center at Quinta Mazatlan. Kids can make crafts with recycled art and enjoy a wide variety of shows including the Green Magician, Staci Gray children’s entertainer from Austin, Sea Turtle Inc., rock climbing and much more.
HEB announces the newest show featuring South Texas’ beautiful wildcat, the Ocelot. US Fish & Wildlife Service along with the Cincinnati Zoo will have four shows throughout the day (9:30, 11:30, 1:30, 3:00). All ages can learn about the recovery strategy for these endangered wild cats.
Jonathan Wood is returning with his Wild Birds of Prey teaching the importance of raptors and how they’re indicators of a diverse and healthy environment. Jonathan will have his LIVE bird ambassadors exhibit all day, and fly the birds at 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
Other festival favorites are Dinosaur George from the History Channel and Danny Connor with his LIVE Reptile Adventures. Meet the largest fresh water turtle in the U.S.—the Alligator Snapping Turtle who favors Texas.
The Earth Day festival will showcase our Green Leaders in the valley with over 30 exhibitors in the large Expo Tent. Enjoy our Green Artists in the House selling their recycled jeans, jewelry, glass, purses, mesquite wood and more.
Special this year will be a Farmer’s Market under the Oak Tree with musicians including Mission Ensemble and Rumbo al Anaqua. Nearby will be Chef James and other chefs offering Organic Cooking Demonstrations in the cottage. Come learn and eat healthy while enjoying the Earth Day celebration.
One easy and fun way to contribute to a healthy environment is to design a small wildscape in your backyard. Join our Valley experts including Mike Heep in Mini-Workshops with opportunities to purchase native plants.
